Index abecedarius: an alphabetical index to the first edition of the 'Species Plantarum' of Linnaeus. Compiled by William Philip Hiern. Barnstaple, Devonshire, England. 1906. 1906

This manuscript and associated papers by the botanist, William Philip Hiern (1839-1925), form a record of the production of his Index abecedarius: an alphabetical index to the first edition of the 'Species Plantarum' of Linnaeus. The manuscript includes the title, introduction and text of the index, copied by an amanuensis but bearing the author's signature, corrections and other annotations. The manuscript was probably written early in 1906, because the author's pencil annotation on the first page says, "Proof revised and forwarded 28 March 1906". Also present are a corrected proof of the title page, a copy of the published index, and portions of 2 envelopes addressed from the publisher to Hiern at the Castle [i.e. Castle Lodge], his home in Barnstaple, Devonshire, England.
